It is more dangerous to use a higher wattage bulb, as light fixtures housing the bulbs are generally closed and thus trap more heat as compared to open fixtures that can ventilate heat from the bottom or sides. Another danger of using a high wattage bulb is the impact it can have on your electrical wiring. Due to overheating, the wiring of the light fixture can become brittle.
To be on the safe side, it is always advisable to check the bulb sizes before installing them on the lighting fixture. Most of the older homes have lighting fixtures that can easily accommodate bulbs of up to 60 watts. If you need more light, then it is advisable to call an electrician in Atlanta to install new lighting fixtures of higher capacity in your home.
In case you need higher light output from your current low capacity lighting fixtures, you may use a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) instead of a normal bulb.
