One thing I hear time and time again is what do I do when my check engine light comes on. Most people have a limited understanding of how cars & trucks really work so it's a common question.
First off, the Check Engine Light (CEL) is an indicator that your car uses to tell you that something needs attention. All 1996 and newer vehicles use a standard protocol called OBD-II. What that means is that all 96-newer vehicles store a trouble code in the car's computer when they trigger the CEL.
The first thing you should do when the check engine light comes on is pay attention to your gauges and the sounds/sights of how the car is operating. Check to see if the car's temperature is too hot, check if it sounds like it's running smoothly, etc. In many cases there will not be any symptoms of an issue, however it varies depending on many factors such as how well the car has been maintained, etc.
If the car is not showing any symptoms (no funny sounds, the gauges are all normal, etc.) you are probably OK to continue driving to your destination. If you do hear any unusual noises, the car is handling poorly, or if there are other warning lights on, then by all means pull over right away if you're in doubt. It's important to stay safe.
The next step in diagnosing the problem is to find out what the trouble codes are that are stored in the car's computer memory. You can buy a simple OBD-II code reader for as little as $39, or you can spend hundreds of dollars on an OBD-II tool that does much more. The initial important thing to do is to get the code(s).
OBD-II codes follow the format P0171 as an example. The P indicates it's a powertrain code. Your car may have one or multiple codes. They may seem cryptic but it's easy to find out what they are by doing an Internet search on the code P0171. That alone should give you the meaning of the code. In some cases you may find an even more indepth article specific to that code.
It's the trouble code(s) what you're really after when the Check Engine Light comes on. That trouble code helps you properly diagnose the problem without wasting money on parts you don't really need. And remember folks, a properly maintained vehicle will likely run better, get you better gas mileage, and have less unexpected breakdowns.
