Aluminum or Steel Horse Trailers - which is better

Apart from knowing whether aluminum or steel horse trailer is better, it is more important to know which of the two is safer. Before buying a costly item like a horse trailer, it is good to analyze which metal will be stronger, more durable and more secure.

We are living in the computer age and one of the greatest blessings is intending buyers of any product/services can obtain a whole lot of information from the Internet and make an informed decision. During earlier times, people complained that steel tended to rust and erode whereas aluminum was reliable and more long-lasting. Thus, aluminum was the preferred material horse trailers. But as time passed, consumers began to understand that aluminum also had certain inherent demerits and not ideally suited for horse trailers. Aluminum posed problems like broken welds, corroded floors, as also some shearing/tearing problems particularly when undergoing minor accidents. Besides, the cost of aluminum has been steadily going up in the market which has further made aluminum trailers less cost-effective.

Notwithstanding the above developments, many leading manufacturers still build their horse trailers with using aluminum frames, roofs, walls, and even interior dividers. There are some manufacturers who predominantly use steel and/or a combination of both steel and aluminum.

Steel certainly has some distinct advantages like it is easy to work with, readily available, easier to repair and good tensile strength, its greatest drawback it is prone to rust and deterioration. Some staunch protagonists of steel horse trailers wishing to overcome the rust problem, started using heavier gauge steel. But, then the trailers became too heavy and unacceptable to the end-users.

The quality of all-aluminum trailers also differ from one manufacturer to the other and the fact is aluminum is much weaker when compared with steel. It is said that a pound of steel is three times as strong as one pound of aluminum.

Manufacturers have to necessarily use increased quantum of aluminum when making the floor and frame to match the strength of steel. This has led to a piquant situation where the aluminum trailer became heavier than one made of steel.

Not only is aluminum relatively weaker, it is also more difficult to repair aluminum trailers because aluminum does not weld as easily as steel. Besides, aluminum is a good conductor of heat making it difficult to keep the horses cool in summer months.

After some extensive research, manufacturers are now attempting to build durable horse trailers free from all defects posed both by steel and aluminum. They are aiming to produce horse trailers that will be dependable, last longer and provide greater comfort to the horses.

Overcoming the rust problem of steel has led manufacturers to use galvanized steel and powder-coated materials. These alternatives are tough and capable of easy repairs and also relatively inexpensive. Now, horse trailers made of galvanized steel frames with molded fiberglass roof and fiberglass fenders are becoming popular and being rampantly used.
