Hyundai Nuvis Concept Points Korean Automaker In A New Direction
When it comes to concept vehicles, most car analysts will tell you that the displayed model will never be built, at least that used to be the case when these cars were featured at leading auto shows around the world. Back in the late 1990s, GM featured its Cadillac Evoq concept a car that was a radical departure from what its luxury division usually sold. Though the Evoq never came to market, its edgy designs were later included in the Cadillac CTS and other models.
Hyundai is also attempting to stretch the perception of what people think of its brand by coming out with a provocative, futuristic model that they call the Nuvis. Based on a sport/utility (crossover) vehicle platform, the Nuvis features the most radical design from Hyundai yet and includes a pair of gull-wing passenger doors. Nuvis is powered by Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, which uses advanced lithium polymer battery technology.
Hyundai's propriety Hybrid Blue Drive architecture helps characterize the Nuvis concept. Its parallel hybrid drive system pairs the already fuel-efficient 2.4-liter Theta II engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW (205 N-m) electric motor for utmost fuel economy.
The Nuvis has a bold look as demonstrated by its powerful, hourglass shape that frames the blue acrylic shield grille and assertive headlamps, whose two glowing white rings are counterbalanced by a pair of red rings on the taillights. Sitting on top of 22-inch wheels, Nuvis' dimensions are tall, beefed-up and protective. The two body-side lines set up what Hyundai calls a flowing water effect, to give the appearance of a vehicle that is always in motion.
"One of the coolest attributes of Nuvis is that the protective roof appears to float on top of the body through the use of hidden pillars and high-contrast glass," said Andre Hudson, Hyundai senior designer. "This effect starts at the headlamps and is carried all the way through to the taillights producing a tall, strong body-side and rear."
Will the Nuvis absolutely be built? That's hard to say, but I can see its design direction incorporated with future Hyundai models. Perhaps more important is the hybrid technology which drives the Nuvis as this is something Hyundai is expected to roll out in the near future, a move that the Korean automaker says will help the brand achieve the highest fuel standards in the world.
