Hyde Park London: A Green Gem of the City
London, the city of castles and skyscrapers, has many large lush parks and gardens to its credit. Hyde Park is a major picnic spot for locals and a significant attraction for tourists. In 1536, the park served as a hunting ground of King Henry VIII. It was in 1637 that Charles I opened the park to general public. The park covers an area of 350 acres making it the largest of all the Royal parks in London. The park is famous for its various attractions and the leisure activities it offers, apart from its scenic beauty. Numerous events are also held in the park including sports events and music concerts. Hyde Park London boasts of popular neighbourhoods on all its sides. Mayfair, Paddington, Bayswater and Kensington mark the boundary of the park. The Park is also surrounded by several luxury and cheap hotels.
The largest draw in the park is the memorial of Diana, Princess of Wales. It is in the form of a beautiful fountain that was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004. This mesmerizing piece of landscaping has been designed by Kathryn Gustafson. The memorial is an oval structure made using 545 pieces of Cornish granite. Another is 7 July Memorial, erected in the honour of the 52 victims of the London subway bombings. You can pay them homage on your visit to Hyde Park, London. The memorial was unveiled by the Duchess of Cornwall and includes 52 stainless steel pillars (one of each dead). The names of all the victims are inscribed on a plaque next to the memorial.
In the Northeast corner of Hyde Park is the famous Speaker's Corner where freedom of speech is being celebrated since 1872. Tennis tournaments are also held here for those who have a competitive urge. Hyde Park, London, also features horseback riding stables. Horses are available on hourly basis. Many people ride their horses at the historic Rotton Row, an empty area in the south side of the park. There are numerous other leisure activities that tourists can take pleasure in including roller-skating and bowling in the part.
