Turn Signals - Why You Should Use Them

Developed in the start of the 1900s, the turn signal was invented for an important purpose. While its design went through a questionable change in the early to mid 1900s with the invention of the trafficator, our present day automobiles signals are sleek, unnoticeable and stylish. Perhaps its inconspicuous nature is what adds to the tendency to be neglected in the course of driving, but a properly developed habit can do wonders in this regard.

The obvious reasons to use your signal are to let other drivers know your intentions, which help for a smoothly running traffic flow. When a driver is unsure of your intentions, it leads to hesitation and possible traffic congestion. The less obvious reasons to use your signal include the presence of cyclists and pedestrians. Believe it or not, they rely on a drivers turn signal just as much as your neighboring motorist. Picture this scene: You're going to make a left turn at a traffic light. You look to your left for an opening, forgetting your turn signal. An opening appears! You take off and strike the pedestrian who had begun to stride across the street because the walk-hand had changed as that car that gave way to your opening passed by. There were two steps you could have taken.

1. Look both ways instead of just the way traffic is coming.
2. Use your signal to let the pedestrian know they need to take more notice of your intentions.

The Statistics

57% of drivers don't use their turn signals. That's 57% too many! There were around 6.5 million car accidents in 2005 in which around 3 million people were injured and almost 50,000 died. Our country's average of deaths caused my car accidents is 123 each day! Naturally not all these accidents are caused by forgetting your turn signal. However, neglecting the signal is listed to be the 3rd cause of accidents according to a study done by the New York Police. This shows how important that sleek, inconspicuous lever on the left side of your steering wheel really is.
