New Fertility Treatment Method Could Help Thousands of Women Conceive

The birth of the first baby born due to a new fertility treatment was announced Tuesday,  at Saint-Vincent de Paul Reproductive Centre in Paris, France, signaling the possibility that thousands of women unable to undergo conventional fertility treatment due to medical reasons may similarly give birth.

The woman's fertility was a result of ovary irregularities that characterizes Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition which affects the fertility of thousands of women worldwide. Women with PCOS are unable to undergo many fertility treatments because of the high doses of hormones required in order to simulate the eggs can be life-threatening.

The new treatment, FertiBella, introduced by LeRoche Benicoeur plc, has demonstrated remarkable success in supporting a recently discovered genetic marker called Human Leukocyte Antigen-G. Identified by scientists for the multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Marseille, France, the embryonic marker has shown to be a predictor for pregnancy success rates. FertiBella raises threshold levels in embryos, associated with a pregnancy rate of 70% in previously infertile women.

In addition to helping women with PCOS, this new fertility treatment could also help women who simply want to reduce the amount of time it takes to conceive. Most notably, many birth control methods can affect the return of fertility for long periods of time.  Pfizer, the manufacturers of Depo Provera, admit that it can take up to 18 months for menstruation to return after you stop receiving injections. And Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories’ Norplant can similarly cause women to experience problems conceiving after discontinued use.

Genetic screening can also reduce fertility in older women. Pregnancy and birth rates have been found to be siginficantly lower among women over the age of 35 who have undergone embryo screening compared to those who have not undergone this type of fertility testing, according to a study presented recently at the Lyon meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

Genetic screening involves the extraction of a single cell from a developing embryo in order to evaluate for the presence of chromosomal defects that can lead to such conditions as Down's syndrome. It was generally thought that genetic screening improves a woman's chances of getting pregnant after the age of 35.
