Carrot Leopard Tail Geckos

Wish that your designer pet gecko had more orange in its tail? There are carrot leopard tail geckos that have more of their tails displaying the orange or orange-red coloration. If you are in the hunt for this kind of unique looking morph, here is the information you need on your very own carrot tail.

 

What Makes A Carrot Tail?

 

Essentially, any amount of orange in the tail section can be considered a carrot tail. However, some enthusiasts and breeders want at least more than 15% to 40% of the tail in orange. This is not just for looks but for breeding purposes. The more orange in the tail of a lizard gives better chances that the offspring of the said lizard will also have more orange in their tails.

 

Some lizards are known to have more than 90% of their tails in orange! The Ray Hay line, one of the most revered lines when it comes to the orange leopard tail geckos, is said to reach these kinds of percentages. However, the Ray Hay line has been criticized for having less than favorable features on the other aspects of its appearance… namely a paler shade for the body.

 

Combinable Morph

 

The good news for enthusiasts is that the characteristic for the carrot tail can be combined with other lines and morphs. It isn't uncommon to see tangerines or albinos with carrot tails. In fact, a fully orange lizard, from body to tail, is one of the morphs that is currently being developed. For now, you can find the orange in the tail in many of the existing popular morphs like the RAPTORs or the Bells and many others.

 

Selective Line Breeding

 

The trait that determines the orange tail is said to be line bred. This means, all you have to do to breed more of the orange tailed creatures is to breed the existing orange tails with each other. Now, you have to just select which parents you would like to breed. This is called selective breeding. Normally you'd want to select the parents that posses the most favorable characteristics and traits so that the offspring would have the best chance of inheriting and improving on the traits that you want.

 

Tails in Adulthood and Maturity

 

It is important to note that the characteristics and traits of the animal can change as they grow. The tail is, unfortunately (or fortunately in some cases) one of the areas that can be affected as the animal matures. This is why some breeders won't sell their animals when they are too young because it would be impossible to judge what kind of traits the animal would have when it reaches maturity. Keep this in mind as well if you plan to breed your animals. Wait for the animals to reach maturity before you try to sort out which parents you want to breed.

You should also know that these designer pet lizards have uses for their tail other than ornamental displays. They store their food in their tails so you may want to check out a lizard's tail to ensure he or she is being fed properly. They also use their tails in defense. If the creature is threatened, he or she can shed the tail to provide a distraction for potential predators. Now, if your lizard becomes excessively stressed, it can shed its tail and you'll be left with a tailless lizard for some time. Don't worry… the tail grows back.
