I used to be extremely annoyed with the drivers in the area that I live in because any time that there was bad weather, I could almost always count on a good chunk of the drivers to have not turned on their headlights. I simply didn't understand how anyone could forget something so simple. For me, turning on my headlights is an automatic response as soon as I see that there is any sort of bad weather or if it is dark. However, what I soon realized was that many vehicles nowadays are equipped with automatic daytime running lights that always turn on when you are driving. This causes your interior dashboard to light up as if your headlights were on when in fact, they are not. Therefore, always make sure that you turn your lights on when you sit down in your car!
Besides talking on your cell phone while driving in the rain, perhaps the most important thing to remember is to keep your distance from other drivers around you and make sure that your headlights are always turned on. It is most dangerous when it first starts to rain because the water mixes with the oil in the roads, causing the surface of the road to be extremely slick and accident prone. Additionally, by putting your headlights on, it illuminates your vehicle so that other drivers can see you and identify the fact that there is another vehicle behind or in front of them.
Not only is driving while talking on your cell phone bad, it is exponentially dangerous whenever you throw Mother Nature in the mix. The absolute last thing that I would want to be doing while driving in a downpour of rain would be talking on my cell phone. Sure, I may be great at multitasking when it comes to certain aspects of my life, but taking any unnecessary chances while I am the designated driver behind the wheel of my car is just stupid.
One example of poor driving can be seen when you see someone who is driving while talking on their cell phone. The other day, it was raining outside, and I was sitting at a light behind another motorist when the light turned green. I decided to give the driver in front of me the benefit of the doubt, thinking that he or she was probably just daydreaming. Then, right before I was about to honk my horn to let them know that the light had changed, they suddenly realized the same and started to drive. It was just as they were turning the corner that the angle of the car caught me just right, and I noticed that they had been on their cell phone. They were distracted from driving because they were too busy carrying a conversation.
I almost always see people driving down the road who don't have their lights turned on or who are following other people way too closely. The end result could be a bad one if they aren't careful.
