Golden Red Arowana - Arowana Secrets

The Asian Arowana is the most exclusive and often best colored Arowana in the whole family. Native to Southeast Asia, they inhabit black water rivers, slow-moving waters flowing through forested swamps, and wetlands. A variety of the Asian Arowana is the Red Arowana, which is further divided into four groups – Blood Red, Orange Red, Chili Red, and Golden Red Arowana. All these varieties are called Super Red or Grade 1 Red. However, the colors of the Orange Red and Golden Red are of a lesser grade red and usually even orange instead of red.

The four groupings are not mere variations in color shades. They also represent differences in fin sizes, shapes, and other physical features. For example, Chili Reds are usually broader and higher, with a pointy head, bigger gins, and big red eyes. Blood reds, on the other hand, have a slimmer and longer body shape, rounder head, slightly smaller fins, and smaller eyes which are lighter in color.

Red arowana will develop color with age. The red color is first visible in the fins in young specimens and gradually moves onto their entire body as they mature. Red Arowana looks like a flame floating in water. They are popular amongst Chinese because red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture. They even call it the dragon fish, relating it to the China Dragon. It comes in different sizes, ranging from 12 to 41 inches in length. Indeed, they can grow pretty large. In nature and breeding ponds, specimens of 36" have been reported but in aquaria, they usually don't grow over 28".

Red Arowana, just like other varieties, loves to eat meat. For such fish, the best diet includes shrimps, pork, smaller fish, and other meaty items. You may also feed your fish with artificially prepared edibles that are filled with essential nutrients.
