LEDs can save lives!
If there is a sudden power cut in a building then everyone is thrown into complete darkness, this creates immediate panic amongst people and visibility is compromised. A lighting system independent from the main grid, one that can be activated immediately in case of an emergency, makes orientation easier and makes it possible to leave the affected building in safety. Illuminated/background-lit safety signs can be used to mark emergency routes; LEDs fulfil all the standard requirements and thus ensure good visibility of the signs. LED lights are generally well suited for emergency and safety lighting because they are very reliable, start up immediately and can be easily controlled.
Floor LED lights are extremely useful in emergency situations, lighting on stairs and corridors can reduce the risk of stumbling. Lyco has a wide range of LED Walkover Lights that can be installed outside and inside. The risk of accidents is particularly high on stairs. Going up and down is safer if the treads are discernible at close range and their further course is easily visible. The light reaches the treads almost without loss if it comes from lamps built into the riser; this would be particularly effective in the theatre and cinemas, but also in any other stairway. For this purpose there are luminaires of numerous types of construction of which several can be built into the riser. Without LEDs the illumination of the edge between the tread and the riser is quite difficult to achieve.
Orientation and marker lights naturally make sense even if the way is not interrupted by steps, for example in long corridors or built in LED lights, either in the wall or the floor is a suitable choice. Coloured LED lights can also prove to be very effective in these types of circumstances, either for locating safe passages or highlighting emergency signs. Colour guides the eye; it can act as an optical stimulant. This applies especially to colourfulness in places where colour is somewhat unusual. The effect is even stronger if a colour change is perceived as movement, Lyco Direct stocks two types of LED light bulbs that change colour automatically, travelling through a spectrum of colours to produce a spectacular lighting effect.
The danger of stumbling on stairs lessens when the treads are easily recognizable; this applies to inside and outside stairs. The best solution is to build LED lights into the risers. LED lights set into the floor are used primarily to increase safety and their coloured lights mark danger spots, for example these could be used for warning of approaching trams, or highlighting the edge of a platform.
Now you know the importance of LED lights and how they can be used in emergencies to help guide people away from danger.
