Collecting Murano Glass - what makes it so collectable?

Well, lets explain it in simplistic terms and it really is simple - it is the very best Art glass anywhere in the world!  This seems like a bold and pretty strong statement to make but it is the only one that fits.  Since the late 13th century, Murano Glass blowers skilled in the exceptionally difficult art of blown glass have been producing some of the most exquisite and highly decorative glass made anywhere in the world.  The King of Italy in the very early years deliberately locked away the Murano master glass blowers on this island for fear of loosing the techniques and skills of his artisans to rival artists and countries. Very early on, companies and styles of Murano Art Glass became popular and exported all over the world.  The most recognisable of these was a style called FACON DE VENISE of the 16th and 17th centuries, with exceptionally delicate stemmed goblets and glassware that now, are some ofthe rarest and most collected of any style of Murano glass.  

Just why is it so difficult to make Murano glass? Well, if you consider that in order to be given the title of Maestro or Master Glass blower, you must serve a minimum of 15 years and up to 20 before you are even considered for this most elusive and highly regarded title.  The secrets and modern techniques of the modern Murano maestro are still kept highly secret with the composition of the glass, kiln temperatures and other information kept close to the chests of the various companies that produce this most brilliant of any hand blown glass in the world.  

The range and diversity of what is available in Murano glass is simply only limited by ones imagination.
