Basic Lighting Tips for Your Apartment

Not many people take lighting seriously when they are planning their apartments. Some people also do not check lighting when they move into a new apartment.  But lighting is important because the light sets the mood for a home.

There are different types of lighting: natural light, electric light, accent light, task light and ambient light.  Your challenge is to use the different lights perfectly to enhance the look and feel of your home.   Think about the activities you do in each room and look at how much natural light goes into the room at specific times of the day. This will help you design lighting for your home to complement your daily activities in each room.

When designing lighting for the different parts of your home, you must not only think about how the lighting will affect your mood when in the room.  You must also think about how much light you need to have when doing the things you need to finish in the day. Another important consideration is the energy consumption of the lights, as this will affect utility bills. You want your lighting to be as cost-efficient as possible.

If you have a home office, make sure that ample natural light passes through the windows in the day time so that you get enough light to get work done without the need to turn on electric lights.  You would also want sunshine to enter your kitchen so that you can feel energized while cooking and preparing meals.

If you want to relax and read a book in one part of your home, you can let natural light in that room and then use lamps to enhance the light. You can also use a cluster of lamps as accents for a room so that you have a cozy interior.

Use accent lights and ambient lights to enhance the furniture and design of your home.  You can use these lights to accentuate paintings, plants, pictures, shelves and other furniture and accents in your home.

Aside from making sure that the lighting in your home works for all your day-to-day activities, there are also certain situations that require special lighting. When throwing home parties, it is important to create the right ambiance for your house through lighting.  You can change the ambiance of your home from somber to energetic and vibrant through the lighting. You can also choose to use reflectors and mirrors to bounce off the lights.
