HID Lights -- the What and the How

These days one is likely to see HID lights on many various types of vehicles. HID light is a high-intensity discharge light that produces more light than ordinary light bulbs, enhancing peripheral visibility up to approximately 70% compared to halogen bulbs and providing 3x more illumination than stock lighting. HID lights give 300% more luminosity than halogen bulbs. HID bulbs run for nearly 1000 hours longer than a normal halogen light bulb. HID bulbs are also environmentally friendly since they can be recycled.

 

How HID lights work:

 

An HID light consists of a glass tube that contains tungsten electrodes, gas and metals. An electric arc is caused by striking across the electrodes; this in turn causes light to be emitted from the tube. The gas helps the light to start, and once heated, the metals function to produce the light. A counterweight is then used to start the lamp and to allow the electricity to continue flowing through the bulb to keep the light on. The function of the counterweights is to control the electrical current running through the glass bulb so that there is just enough current flowing through to ignite the light and maintain it. Electronic counterbalances use electronic circuitry to control the electrical flow within the HID bulb. A digital counterbalance works on a higher frequency, so it produces more light but uses less energy to do so. The digital aspect of the counterbalance allows it to function at consistently correct temperatures, which helps the bulbs to last longer.

 

 

Types of counterbalances for HID lights:

 

There are three diverse types of counterbalances that are used with high-intensity discharge lights, and they include magnetic, electronic, and digital counterweights. Magnetic counterbalance is also called a core and coil counterbalance, which refers to the components inside the counterbalance. Along with a capacitor, they work together to direct the current to ignite the light and keep the energy flowing at exactly the correct rate for the bulb. Some magnetic counterbalances also come with an igniter; they are used in synchronization with sodium and metal halide lamps.

 

HID Lights also provide lighting for homes and gardens. You can even use HID lights in the interior of your home if your existing lighting arrangement is not sufficient.  HID lights are used all over the world and their popularity is increasing with each passing day as they produce more light than halogen bulbs for the same amount of power used.

On the downside, they are more expensive, but one might argue that due to their efficiency and long life, they end up being the lesser expensive choice over the long run.
