Alternatives for use during Lighting Emergency

A lighting emergency may occur when the main power supply is cut off and is no longer able to supply power for lighting. Lighting emergencies have in the past caused panic and injury, and new ways are being discovered to ensure the continuity of power supply for lighting in the case of lighting emergency. Generators are one of the power sources that supply power for lighting during a lighting emergency. Generators commonly use fuel, particularly diesel, and may be configured to turn on automatically in the case of power interruption. The generators may also be turned on manually by turning a key or switching an ignition. This action typically directs power to lights in the building, which are crucial for the smooth running of activities.

Some lamps use a battery pack that is rechargeable and are critical during a lighting emergency at home. These lamps can be small and portable, carried by hand and easily stored away. They are retrieved during lighting emergency and provide light with just a flip of a switch. Their battery life is dependant on the size and type, but they do not ordinarily last for long periods of time (about 8 hours) as they are meant to be just a temporary source of light. There are also large powerful lights that are manufactured for use in lighting emergency, and are commonly used at construction sites, factories, and other places where vital work needs to go on even during a power outage. Such bulbs derive power from large battery packs that are charged and are able to work until the problem with the main power supply can be sorted out.

Flashlights are easy to ignore but they have to be applauded for their role in lighting emergency. Flashlights are easy to store and carry, and use batteries, which are either disposable or rechargeable. They are commonly used in the house for short-term lighting during a lighting emergency, mainly to illuminate the way to a central location or to find an alternative power source in the dark. Flashlights in the form of floodlights have been recently developed, and are perfect for out door use. They use a high voltage battery pack, which can go for hours and illuminate large areas as well as far distances. They are however heavy and bulky, and should be preferably used outdoors and only when necessary, as the can injure a careless user.

LED and strobe kits have been recently developed to provide for lighting during a lighting emergency and have proved to be extremely effective. These kits also ordinarily use rechargeable battery packs. The light produced by the kits may however vary depending on the purpose at hand. For the function of illumination, LED and strobe kits contain steady burning bulbs that are bright and illuminate large areas. For the purpose of attracting attention, these kits use flashing lights that may signal where people need to assemble during a lighting emergency, or act as a pointer to the location of someone in distress.
