Martin Yale 1648 Automatic Letter Opener Review
Overview:
- The Martin Yale 1648 Automatic Letter opener is a high speed letter opening machine that is designed for medium and large mailrooms that deal with high volumes of mail on a daily basis.
- This machine was formerly known as the Martin Yale 1648 chadless automatic letter opener. However, it has recently been changed by Martin Yale and is no longer a chadless machine. The new design for this machine is actually an improvement since the chadless design was was the source of many problems with this machine in the past.
- The Martin Yale 1648 letter opener offers the ability to process large stacks of envelopes in no time at all without the need for user intervention.
Strengths / Features:
- The 1648 automatic letter opener is capable of handling up to 12,000 number ten envelopes per hour. This makes it an ideal choice for a medium to large sized mail room that handles up to five thousand envelopes per day. You can place a five inch stack of envelopes onto the machine and it will automatically feed them, open them and stack them on the other side. You don't even need to fan the envelopes when placing them into the feed tray. It doesn't get much easier than that.
- Smaller letter opener machines such as the Martin Yale 1632 and Martin Yale 1616 are not designed to handle thicker envelopes. However, the 1648 can handle envelopes that are up to 3/8" thick.
- The Martin Yale 1648 can also handle larger sized envelopes. Many other openers can only handle sizes up to a #10 envelope. This machine can open letters that are as large as 4.25" x 9.5" in size. This ability to deal with larger sized letters means that less mail needs to be opened by hand within your organization.
- The Martin Yale 1648 uses completely enclosed blades to help ensure safety. It also has a small adjustment knob on the side of the machine that allows you to adjust how far into the envelope the machine will cut.
Weaknesses / Limitations:
- The new design of the 1648 letter opener means that it cuts off a small portion of the top of the envelopes in order to open the letters. This method is extremely effective and efficient for letter opening. However, if the items inside your envelopes are too close to the top of the envelopes they can be sliced by the machine. For this reason, it is always wise to pair the Martin Yale 1648 with a paper jogger or envelope jogging machine. The jogger will help to ensure that all of the items inside the envelopes are aligned properly so that they aren't damaged in the opening process.
- The blades and belts in the 1648 are wearable parts and will eventually need to be replaced. Under normal circumstances the 1648 should run for years without the need for any substantial maintenance. However, it is important to note that you will eventually need to replace these parts in order to continue using the machine.
Recommendation:
- The Martin Yale 1648 high speed automatic letter opener is ideal for medium and large mailrooms that are looking for speed, safety and performance in their letter opening equipment.
- This machine is offered at an excellent price point for its features and is ideal for companies who are dealing with between one thousand and five thousand letters per day.
- However, in order to obtain the full benefit from this letter opener. It should really be paired with a high quality paper jogger or envelope jogging machine.

Letters on the Wall $11.99 Since its creation in 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become the most visited National Park Services site. Each year, 4.5 million people come to the Wall. Many of them leave letters or other special objects. Every night, park rangers collect and inventory these mementos—now numbering well over 90,000—and put them into government storage. Michael Sofarelli, the son of a Vietnam War veteran, has combed through the archives searching for the most gripping letters and objects: a mother awaiting word of her missing son, a former comrade recounting a battle story, a pair of well-worn ballet slippers, and a collection of cigars. These items are not only a tribute to the fallen soldiers; they pay tribute as well to the families and friends who waited at home and the comrades who have never forgotten their brothers. They tell the story of a war that is still being fought by many who served and a conflict that changed the lives of many Americans forever. |

The Little Women Letters $11.99 Vibrant, fresh, and intelligent, The Little Women Letters explores the imagined lives of Jo March’s descendants—three sisters who are both thoroughly modern and thoroughly March. As uplifting and essential as Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Gabrielle Donnelly’s novel will speak to anyone who’s ever fought with a sister, fallen in love with a fabulous pair of shoes, or wondered what on earth life had in store for her. With her older sister, Emma, planning a wedding and her younger sister, Sophie, preparing to launch a career on the London stage, Lulu can’t help but feel like the failure of the Atwater family. Lulu loves her sisters dearly and wants nothing but the best for them, but she finds herself stuck in a rut, working dead-end jobs with no romantic prospects in sight. When her mother asks her to find a cache of old family recipes in the attic of her childhood home, Lulu stumbles across a collection of letters written by her great-great-grandmother Josephine March. In her letters, Jo writes in detail about every aspect of her life: her older sister, Meg’s, new home and family; her younger sister Amy’s many admirers; Beth’s illness and the family’s shared grief over losing her too soon; and the butterflies she feels when she meets a handsome young German. As Lulu delves deeper into the lives and secrets of the March sisters, she finds solace and guidance, but can the words of her great-great-grandmother help Lulu find a place for herself in a world so different from the one Jo knew? Some things, of course, remain unchanged: the stories and jokes that form a family’s history, the laughter over tea in the afternoon, the desire to do the right thing in spite of obstacles. And above all, of course, the fierce, undying, and often infuriating bond of sisterhood that links the Atwater women every bit as firmly as it did the March sisters all those years ago. Both a loving tribute to Little Women and a wonderful contemporary family story, The Little Women Letters is a heartwarming, funny, and wise novel for today. |
