You live in the country and there isn't much in the way of street lighting, or maybe you live on a poorly lit back road and would like to reduce the chances of hitting a stray dog or deer at night. I will go over the best options to increase your vision on the road at night.
The best way to increase driving visibility is to make sure you are using HID technology also known as xenon lighting in your headlamps. This lighting technology is much more advanced that traditional halogen setups. Be sure not to confuse tinted colored halogen bulbs for xenon lights. Ensure you have xenon headlights installed on your vehicle by looking for a ballast either integrated into the headlamp or mounted outside of the headlight assembly. Some cars come from the factory with these installed, but that's not always the case. If you don't have them on your vehicle don't worry, there are after market kits you can get for around $90. I would make sure you buy a higher quality kit, as all kits are not created equal and if you cheap out you could be potentially purchasing a fire hazard. Its proven that installing xenon headlights can improve visibility 2-3X. There are different "temperature" kits available for sale, but the only difference between these is generally the color of the light. I'd recommend picking 6000K as it increases driving visibility the most. There should not be a price difference for different colors so don't let some of the sneakier online stores trick you into thinking one costs more. Stay away from more mom and pap looking sites as they generally skimp and sell you cheap import garbage. Installation is pretty easy, they come with in depth instructions, but if you are too lazy or scared you should be able to get them professionally installed for less than $50. Another option is to install fog lights. This will really help your side vision as they are mounted lower on the car and the light spreads wider. You can even install xenon lights onto your fogs for the best results. There is a pretty good explanation as to why to upgrade to xenon lights here. It explains the technical aspects of xenon technology and its benefits.
Lastly, make sure your headlamps are clean. The light will not diffuse properly if the lenses are covered in dust or dirt. Just run a wet rag over the outside of your lamps and you will notice a big difference.
