Preparing a First-Aid Kit

Accidents happen and emergencies strike without a warning.  You can't be careful enough to avoid every accident so the best thing is to be prepared for such emergencies.  During our everyday life, we experience several minor accidents such as cuts, burns, insect bites and other types of injuries.  The best way to prepare for such injuries is to have a first-aid kit ready and learn how to use it.  You can purchase one of many first-aid kits available in the market or you can put together a customized kit according to your own requirements.

Contents of a First-Aid Kit

There is no definitive list of items that should be included in a first-aid kit.  The following are some of the common items for a first-aid kit.

- First-aid manual
- Adhesive tape and bandages
- Antibacterial wipes
- Gauze pads
-Soap
- Mineral water bottle
- Antibiotic ointment
- Antiseptic solution such as hydrogen peroxide
- Anti itching creams
- Over-the-counter medicines for pain relief and fever
- Prescription medications
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Cold packs
- Alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
-Thermometer
-At least 2 pairs of surgical gloves
-Flashlight and extra batteries

You may add items according to your individual requirements and circumstances.  If you are creating your own kit, you may use a tackle box or a similar type of container that has plenty of room and which is easily identifiable.

Important Reminders

Preparing a first-aid kit is important but knowing how to use it is equally important.  A first-aid manual can provide you with all of the necessary information about using a first-aid kit.  Make sure that all members of your family have at least a basic idea of how to use the kit.

You should keep a first-aid kit at home and one in your car.  These should not be accessible by unsupervised children but should be easily accessible in an emergency.

Since these kits contain medicines and other items that have an expiry date, make sure to regularly check and replace the expired items.  Also, ensure proper functioning of equipment such as flashlight.

Taking a first-aid class is not absolutely necessary but can be very helpful.  Learning about the techniques like CPR can mean the difference between life and death. 

It may also be helpful to practice for emergencies so that you know how to use the items in the first-aid kit.

Another thing that may be helpful for emergencies that require more than a first-aid kit is to keep a document containing basic medical information about each family member.  This information may include existing illnesses, medications being taken and any allergies.
