An overview of Halogen Light Bulbs

Selected for their clearer light, halogen Bulbs are a relative newcomer to the world of light bulbs and are commonly found in the Bathrooms and kitchens of new build designer Apartments, Flats and Houses.

A Halogen bulb is basically a regular incandescent light bulb but with a few modifications. The most obvious difference is that the bulb is filled with the gas that gives the Halogen bulb its name; Halogen.

When a light bulb is on, the tungsten in the filament evaporates and attatches itself to the glass of the bulb, causing the bulb to dim as it ages, the purpose of the gas in the Halogen bulb is to react with the evaporated tungsten and return it to the filament. This is known as the Halogen Cycle. The halogen cycle gives a Halogen bulb a much longer life than an equivalent regular incandescent bulb and keeps the bulb burning bright throughout its entire life span.

Some people are concerned about the Ultraviolet output of halogen bulbs but generally this should not be a cause of concern. Halogen bulbs do put out a certain amount of ultraviolet, though this is only slightly more than that of a standard incandescent bulb. If Ultraviolet output is something that is something you would like to try to avoid altogether, there are a couple of solutions. There are blocking clear filter gels on the market, such as the ‘GAM 1510 UV Shield’ which can be smeared over the bulb. Another alternative is to take the holiday option and wear sun screen. This is not recommended to those of you who dislike the smell of coconuts. My advice would be to just suck it up.

Halogen bulbs die in exactly the same way as incandescent bulbs, as tungsten burns, it evaporates and eventually a weak spot emerges in the filament, when this breaks, it’s off to light bulb heaven. Although the halogen gas in halogen bulbs returns the tungsten to the filament, it is not evenly distributed and eventually the filament will still develop these weak spots and pass over to the afterlife. R.I.P Hal, I’ll take care of your dog.

But fear not, though Hal the Halogen Bulb is gone, finding a replacement couldn’t be easier, the popularity of Halogen Bulbs means that you can buy them anywhere, even your local supermarket. Just don’t put them in the pantry and try to eat them when you come home from a big night out.

Halogen bulbs come in many different varieties such as Capsule, Double Ender, Reflector, Coloured, Low Voltage Dichroic, and many more and are suitable for such far fetched applications as swimming pool lights, aquarium lights and patio heaters. When buying replacement bulbs, make sure you buy the right one or you could end up burning under a patio heater in your bathroom or using a standard bulb in an aquarium and electrocuting your fish. At least with that patio heater you will be able to cook and eat them though.
