Working Of Single Acting Cylinder
Before talking about single acting cylinder, we need to know what exactly a hydraulic cylinder is and how does it operates. It is define as a mechanical device that transfers power by using high pressure oil acting against the surface area of a piston within the cylinder. These cylinders generally used to perform heavy task and they are pretty much seen in big construction sites. Tube, Piston (optional), Rod, Gland and End cap, these are the five components, which are typically used to make this cylinder. This cylinder provides linear force in one axis in either one or two directions more clearly a single or double acting cylinder respectively.
A single acting cylinder, can mechanically moved only in one direction because in this cylinder oil only acts on one side of the piston. Generally to perform appropriate activities from these cylinders an external force is required in the form of gravity, or sometimes a spring or another hydraulic cylinder from the opposite direction.
A general disorder has been pretty much active in single acting cylinders that in such cylinders oil pressure act directly on the end of the rod, and there is no piston. A cylinder having a piston, can have a rod of any size and the force can be calculated or controlled by the piston design, whereas single acting cylinder design lack this thing as the force is limited by the surface area of the rod. In a double acting cylinder due to a reduced surface area of the piston for the oil to act upon, the "closing" power is always less than the "opening" power and the reduced surface area is exactly the surface area of the end of the rod.
