4. Install a basic plug-in timer. Even the simplest type of light timers can increase your overall security levels around the house. Basic timers will be able to turn lights on and off at specified intervals throughout the day. Anyone passing by your house will see lights on after dark and it will appear that someone is home. Normally, burglars do not want to deal with people when they are thinking of breaking into a home. You can move on to the advanced light timers if these devices don't seem smart enough.

 

5. Using advanced timers. The most advanced forms timers on the market can work with lights as well as other devices around the house. If you want a television or radio to go on independently or along with lights, you can program all of these devices from a single timer. One of the best features is the random control, which mimics the habits of people (turning devices on and off at random) rather than working on a set schedule.
