Halloween Color Contact Lenses - What You Need To Know

With Halloween just around the corner, many of our Queen Creek, San Tan, Gilbert and Chandler patients are wondering if color contacts are the way to go this year to add some effects to their Halloween costumes. But, are color contacts with no prescription safe for your eyes, even for one day? Let's look into it.

If you're looking at wearing color contact lenses for Halloween, simply for cosmetic reasons, there are a few things that you'll need to know:

1. What the FDA says: it is illegal to sell decorative contact lenses without a valid prescription, however during Halloween the easiest way around that for vendors is to sell over the internet. Be extremely careful if you are thinking of purchasing color contacts from an internet source.
   1. Last year, the FDA received reports of corneal ulcer associated with wear of decorative contact lenses in excess of the recommended period. Corneal ulcer can progress rapidly, leading to internal ocular infection if left untreated — and possible blindness.
   2. No Sharing. Never, under any circumstances, let a friend or family member try out or borrow your contact lenses, whether they're Halloween color contacts or your prescription contacts.
   3. No Sleeping. Never fall asleep in these color contact lenses. As we all know, things can get a little crazy and late nights are very common on Halloween. Halloween scares dentists, for all of the candy, and optometrists, for all of the party animals who fall asleep in color contacts or mishandle them.
   4. Prone To Eye Infections. If you have had problems with eye infections in the past, or suffer from seasonal allergies that affect you during the Halloween season, color contact lenses might not be the best choice for you.
   5. Wash Your Hands. Throughout the night, as it becomes later and you start to become tired, your eyes might start to bother you. If you've never worn contact lenses before, let alone color contact lenses, they could start to irritate your eyes as the night rolls on. The absolute worst thing that you can do it take them out or put them in without washing your hands thoroughly.

 

It's pretty much a given that during Halloween there will be many costumes that involve the use of color contacts. If you have a prescription for contacts, have ordered prescription color contacts from your eye doctor, and are familiar with the precautions that you must take when wearing contacts, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

However, if you are a one-time-color-contact-user who is just interested in looking scary on Halloween, be sure to do your research and use these devices properly. The FDA considers all contacts, Halloween color contacts included, as medical devices and should be treated as such. The mishandling of color contact lenses can lead to many conditions from eye infections to glaucoma to eve blindness.
