Fly-tipping - an illegal rubbish clearance practice!

Flytipping costs tax-payers hundreds of millions of pounds every year, and can have an effect on house prices and local businesses. It damages the natural environment, causes damage to wildlife, and effects our quality of life.

* you don't check that the company or person you give waste to has a licence to carry waste
* you don't check that the company or person you give waste to is not taking it to an unlicensed site

You can check whether a company is licensed to carry waste by searching the public register on the Environment Agency website.

The government says tougher action has led to an 18.7% fall in the unlawful dumping of garbage in the last year. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has discovered that the number of incidents of illegally dumped waste in England fell by nearly one-fifth (18.7%) to 947,000, following a 9% decrease the previous year.

In total, there were 2,460 prosecution actions carried out in 2009-10, of which 97% achieved a successful outcome such as a fine.
