When commercials, print ads, outdoor advertising and even online pop-ups aren't enough, what's a car maker to do? Maybe slip in an ad in a video game? Perhaps it's not that the mainstream media isn't working, but that a whole other audience can be reached through this slightly offbeat venue.

Movie advertising has worked for many years so why not another area targeting much of the same audience? General Motors is hoping to repeats its success from the Transformersseries by inserting the 2011 Chevrolet Volt in a video game. Kinect utilizes some intricate technology to turn the player into the virtual game controller via body parts. There's no need for buttons or sticks or any other distracting and finger-numbing devices. Players will have the opportunity to build a customized Volt online and drag it over to the game where they will compete with others. Whether or not this will a shared game has not been announced, but it is expected to work much like the Xbox Live. Volt may also be the first exposure many of this younger generation have to an electric car. After all, there is a back up gasoline engine, so it's not like you're in the middle of a race and just have your car shut down in the middle of the road.

Chicago Chevy Silverado customers should enjoy the video game, but be sure to take a ride in the real thing when it gets to the showroom. The Volt will be better in reality.
