Career Success - Tips for Hot Jobs in the 21st Century
Imagine a world with a qualified workforce but unable to staff it due to unskilled workers.
Technology and innovation, and global busines and the emerging American workforce are changing the nature of work and the workplace.
I was reading a brief by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings about the new directions of higher education. In the brief the Department of Education reports 4 million new job openings through 2014 in health care, education, and computer and mathematical sciences. Although Americans have been facing historic joblessness and severe unemployment, the budding 21st century economy and workforce symbolizes economic rebirth, high job growth and enriched career opportunities to strategic thinkers and go-getters. My suggestion for future growth potential is that the key to understanding career-life success in the 21st century and global world is knowing and targeting the High Growth, High Demand job sectors.
For example, in 2007 1.37 million jobs were unfilled due to unskilled workers with deficient skills. Fields like health care, information technology, and advanced manufacturing have jobs and solid career paths left open due to a lack of candidates to fill them.
My professional opinion for competitive job hunters, career-seekers, applicants and workers is pay attention to career paths in the14 high growth, high demand industries that will add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy or affect the growth of other industries due to existing and emerging buisness being reengineered by technology and innovations requiring world views and new skill sets for workers. The 14 sectors include:
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Biotechnology
- Construction
- Energy
- Financial Services
- Geospatial Technology
- Health care
- Homeland Security
- Hospitality
- Information Technology
- Retail
- Transportation
For further details about the 14 sectors consult the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
In short, even though America is facing an all time jobless high in 25 years, the 21st century offers high growth potential and enriched career opportunities. As a Global Career and Technical Education Author/ Lecturer, current data suggests that 60 percent of new jobs will be filled by 30 percent of applicants or workers. So, my lasting thoughts are will we be prepared? Will we be looking in the right places for jobs? Who will be qualified for the new job openings? Will we be able staff the qualified workforce?

The Progressive Century $42 Can Labour and the Liberal Democrats redefine politics to make the 21st Century a progressive century? Can the centre-left find a common cause to tackle the alienation from politics, the globalisation of power, the need to modernise public services and the will to face up to the environmental challenges? Will the centre-left unite to change the voting system and win the case for Britain entering the single currency? Will the centre-left give real priority to family life and the tackling of discrimination against women? These are some of the questions that are tackled in this topical and controversial book, which brings together leading politicians, journalists, academics and thinkers. Contributors include Robin Cook, Menzies Campbell, Lord Ashdown, Harriet Harman, Ruth Kelly, Peter Mandelson, Don MacIntyre, Steve Richards, Anna Coote, Polly Toynbee, Matthew Taylor, Kirsty Milne, Don Foster and Chris Huhne. |

Left in the Past $110 In Left in the Past, Alastair Bonnett re-assesses the place of nostalgia within radical politics and, in doing so, provides a new introduction to the history and politics of the left. Left in the Past argues that nostalgia has been an important, but repressed, aspect of the socialist imagination. The book begins by showing the centrality and repression of nostalgia in both 19th-century radicalism and anti-colonial radicalism. This is followed by an examination of the consequences of this inheritance amongst revolutionary intellectuals in the twentieth century. Bonnett also shows that, today, in our "post-socialist era", the relationship between radicalism and a sense of loss, and the ambivalent position of socialism in and against modernity, can be viewed with greater clarity. Bonnett's unique approach in how to understand the left in an age of post-socialism makes Left in the Past a provocative but necessary resource for anyone interested in the history and politics of the left and radicalism. |

Aristocratic Century $29 Since the work of Butterfield and Namier in the 1930s, it has commonly been said that eighteenth-century England appears atomised, left with no overall interpretation. Subsequent work on religious differences and on party strife served to reinforce the image of a divided society, and in the last ten years historians of the poor and unprivileged have suggested that beneath the surface lurked substantial popular discontent. Professor Cannon uses his 1982 Wiles Lecture to offer a different interpretation - that the widespread acceptance of aristocratic values and aristocratic leadership gave a remarkable intellectual, political and social coherence to the century. He traces the recovery made by the aristocracy from its decade in 1649 when the House of Lords was abolished as useless and dangerous. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the peerage re-established its hold on government and society. Professor Cannon is forced to challenge some of the most cherished beliefs of English historiography - that Hanoverian society, at its top level, was an open elite, continually replenished by vigorous recruits from other groups and classes. He suggests that, on the contrary, in some respects the English peerage was more exclusive than many of its continental counterparts and that the openness was a myth which itself served a potent political purpose. Of the prospering burgeoisie, he argues that the remarkable thing was not their assertiveness but their long acquiescence in patrician rule, and he poses the paradox of a country increasingly dominated by a landed aristocracy giving birth to the first industrial revolution. His final chapter discusses the ideological under-pinning which made aristocratic supremacy acceptable for so long, and the emergence of those forces and ideals which were ultimately to replace it. |

No Left Turn $26.99 The way some histories tell it, Europeans came to New Zealand keen to establish a Little Britain in the South Seas. Not so, says Chris Trotter. Most nineteenth century immigrants wanted something better than the misery and oppression of the world they had left, and Trotter reveals just how close they and their descendants came to building a new one. On each occasion, however, their achievements were resisted, and ultimately overturned, by those who saw New Zealand simply as a source of profits. Trotter pulls no punches in describing the methods these partisans of profit used to ensure there was no Left turn: jamming radio broadcasts, political arson - even murder. From Massey's Cossacks to Muldoon's riot squads; violence and repression have been the Right's weapons - not the Left's. Charting the evolution of New Zealand's unique brand of democratic socialism, Trotter offers insightful and often surprising verdicts on the leading participants, including John A Lee, Peter Fraser, Fintan Patrick Walsh, David Lange and Helen Clark. Passionately argued, infused with poetic imagery and comprehensively researched, No Left Turn is a unique and indispensable contribution to our political and social history - an inspiration for anyone who puts money second and people first, and a deliberate provocation to everyone else. |

Right and Left $12.99 Joseph Roth has been described as one of the greatest writers in German of this century ( The Times ). With tragic foresight, Right and Left , first published in 1929, evokes the nightlife, corruption, political unrest, and economic tyranny of Berlin in the twenties, the same territory covered trenchantly in Roth's reportage, recently published as What I Saw: Reports from Berlin 1920-33 . After serving in World War I, Paul Bernheim returns to Berlin to find himself heir to his recently deceased father's banking empire. Increasingly beset by skyrocketing inflation, and dismayed by his brother's infatuation with the brownshirts, Bernheim turns to an outsider for helpa profiteering Russian migr whose advice proves alternately advantageous and disastrous. Too late to change his fate, he realizes he has been decieved by a master in the craft of manipulation. |
