Which Oriental rug is which? Find out which Oriental rug is which and which rug would best suit your interior style

Is it Persian, Turkish or Chinese ….? And which style of rug suits which style of décor. Rugs are a popular fashion item in the modern home. Many people are decorating their homes with beautiful rugs to add pattern, texture and colour to their interior spaces.

However some people are confused about which Oriental rug is which and which style of rug would work best in their home. This article will clearly outline the major differences in the style of the rugs; the aim to help you choose the best rug for your home. You can buy expensive antique rugs which would be a long term investment or select from the many cheaper rugs now available.

If a rug is over 75 years old it is considered an antique. Semi-antique rugs are less than 75 years old and a rug is considered new if it is less than 15 years old. The rug considered the oldest in the world is the Pazyryk Carpet dated from 5th Century BC. The rug was found in Siberia in 1949.

Persian rugs have been made for centuries. They are usually made of wool but cotton and the more expensive silk are also used to create these wonderful master pieces.

Persian rugs have curvilinear floral designs, vases, and birds and usually have a medallion in the center. They come in sizes of 10 Feet (215cm) by 15 Feet (450cm) or 13 Feet (400cm) by 24 Feet (730 cm). This style of rug would work well in a room with in a traditional or period style. The formality of the rug design would marry successfully with the classic proportions and motifs of classical design or with the flowing lines of Art Nouveau.

Turkish rugs can be recognized by the altar and tulip designs of the prayer rugs they often come in red and green colours. They usually come in three sizes; 3 Feet (92cm) by 5 Feet (152cm), 5 Feet (152cm) by 7 Feet (213cm) and 6 Feet (183cm) by 10 Feet (305cm). These rugs would work well in a colourful modern interior.

The Caucasian rug has geometric figures of men, birds and animals. They are usually manufactured in dark red colours. They come in two sizes 5 Feet (152cm) by 7 Feet (213cm) and 6 Feet (183cm) by 10 Feet (305cm). This style of rug would work well with the geometric angular shapes of the Art Deco period.

Turkoman rugs have rows of rectilinear octagons and come in a range of dark reddish browns. These rugs come in a rich range of colours created from vegetable and natural dyes. The background colour of the rug is often red or tan. They come in two sizes 6 Feet (183cm) by 10 Feet (305cm) and 15 Feet (460cm) by 24 Feet (730cm)

Chinese rugs are decorated with Chinese symbols, cloud bands, flowers, animals and birds. Simple classic circular medallions are usually placed in the center with a wide plain border. Chinese rugs are woven in 5 ply silk. They come in two sizes 5 Feet (152cm) by 8 Feet (245cm) and 9 Feet (275cm) by 12 Feet (365cm). The luxurious Chinese rug would marry gracefully with the classic interior. However there are a number of designs available that were created in the Art Deco era.
